Helicobacter pylori infection is among the most common human infections and the major risk factor for peptic disease and gastric cancer. Immunization with vaccines containing the H pylori vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA), cytotoxin-associated antigen (CagA), and neutrophil-activating protein (NAP), alone or in combination, have been shown to prevent experimental infection in animals.

This analysis reports the rate of sustained virological response (SVR) in patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 or 4 who were assigned to 24 weeks of treatment with pegylated interferon (peginterferon) alfa-2a 180 mug/wk plus ribavirin 1000/1200 mg/day after achieving a rapid virological response (RVR; HCV RNA level <50 IU/mL) at week 4 in a prospective trial investigating response-guided therapy.

Despite poor performance, guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests (G-FOBT) are most frequently implemented for colorectal cancer screening. Immunochemical fecal occult blood tests (I-FOBT) are claimed to perform better, without randomized comparison in screening populations. Our aim was to randomly compare G-FOBT with I-FOBT in a screening population.

Tailored organ-sparing procedures have been shown to alleviate pain and are potentially superior in terms of preservation of endocrine and exocrine function as compared with standard resection (Whipple) for chronic pancreatitis with inflammatory pancreatic head tumor. Long-term results comparing these 2 procedures have not been published so far. The aim of this study was to report on long-term results of a randomized trial comparing a classical resective procedure (pylorus-preserving Whipple) with an extended drainage procedure (Frey) for chronic pancreatitis.

IC41 is a synthetic peptide vaccine containing 7 relevant hepatitis C virus (HCV) T-cell epitopes and the T helper cell (Th)1/Tc1 adjuvant poly-L-arginine. IC41 has been shown to be safe and to induce HCV-specific interferon (IFN)-gamma-secreting CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in healthy volunteers. We aimed to investigate whether IC41 is able to induce HCV-specific T-cell responses also in chronic hepatitis C patients.

Cholesterol cholelithiasis is one of the most prevalent and most costly digestive diseases in developed countries and its incidence has increased markedly in Asian countries owing to the adoption of Western-type dietary habits. Because animal experiments showed that high efficiency of intestinal cholesterol absorption contributes to gallstone formation, we explored whether the potent cholesterol absorption inhibitor ezetimibe could prevent gallstones and promote gallstone dissolution in mice and reduce biliary cholesterol content in human beings.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) recurrence after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is significantly reduced by prophylaxis with hyperimmune antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) globulins (HBIG) and antiviral drugs. The role of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in HBV recurrence remains unclear. We investigated the association between HCC pre-OLT and HBV recurrence post-OLT.

Intravenous bolus plus infusion proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy is recommended for patients with bleeding ulcers and higher risk stigmata. If frequent oral dosing of PPIs provided similar antisecretory effect, this might be preferred based on ease and cost.
