6662. Antiseizure Medications for Adults With Epilepsy: A Review.
Epilepsy affects approximately 65 million people worldwide. Persistent seizures are associated with a 20% to 40% risk of bodily injuries (eg, fractures, burns, concussions) over 12-month follow-up. The primary goal of epilepsy treatment is to eliminate seizures while minimizing adverse effects of antiseizure drugs (ASDs).

A genetic variant in the TTR gene (rs76992529; Val122Ile), present more commonly in individuals with African ancestry (population frequency: 3%-4%), causes misfolding of the tetrameric transthyretin protein complex that accumulates as extracellular amyloid fibrils and results in hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis.

Coronary plaques that are prone to rupture and cause adverse cardiac events are characterized by large plaque burden, large lipid content, and thin fibrous caps. Statins can halt the progression of coronary atherosclerosis; however, the effect of the proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 inhibitor alirocumab added to statin therapy on plaque burden and composition remains largely unknown.

The 2-dose hepatitis B vaccine with a cytosine phosphoguanine adjuvant (HepB-CpG vaccine; Heplisav-B) generated higher seroprotection in prelicensure trials than did a 3-dose hepatitis B vaccine with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant (HepB-alum vaccine; Engerix-B). However, in 1 trial, a higher number of acute myocardial infarction (MI) events were observed among those who received the HepB-CpG vaccine than among those who received the HepB-alum vaccine, an outcome requiring further study.
