Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases result in a substantial reduction in quality of life and a considerable socioeconomic impact. In IBS, diagnosis and treatment options are limited, but evidence for involvement of the gut microbiome in disease pathophysiology is emerging. Here we analyzed the prevalence of endoscopically visible mucosal biofilms in gastrointestinal disease and associated changes in microbiome composition and metabolism.

Zenker diverticulum (ZD) is the most common hypopharyngeal diverticulum seen often in septuagenarian and octogenarian males. Oropharyngeal dysphagia is the most common presenting symptom. Treatment of ZD has been advancing with the introduction of a wide variety of accessory devices, primarily focusing on obliteration of the septum by complete transection of the cricopharyngeus muscle to recreate the common cavity and restore normal pharyngo-esophageal bolus outflow. This review aimed to provide an overview of the various surgical and endoscopic treatment options for ZD, while focusing specifically on Zenker peroral endoscopic myotomy.

Patients with multiple recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI) have a disturbed gut microbiota that can be restored by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Despite extensive screening, healthy feces donors may carry bacteria in their intestinal tract that could have long-term health effects, such as potentially procarcinogenic polyketide synthase-positive (pks+) Escherichia coli. Here, we aim to determine whether the pks abundance and persistence of pks+E coli is influenced by pks status of the donor feces.
