The benefit of radiotherapy for rectal cancer is based largely on a balance between a decrease in local recurrence and an increase in bowel dysfunction. Predicting postoperative disability is helpful for recovery plans and early intervention. We aimed to develop and validate a risk model to improve the prediction of major bowel dysfunction after restorative rectal cancer resection with neoadjuvant radiotherapy using perioperative features.

3388. Comparison of clinicopathologic characteristics among patients with HBV-positive, HCV-positive and Non-B Non-C hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The incidence of HBV-negative and HCV-negative hepatocellular carcinoma (NBNC-HCC) is significantly increasing. However, their clinicopathologic features and prognosis remain elucidated. Our study aimed to compare the clinicopathologic characteristics and survival outcomes of NBNC-HCC with hepatitis virus-related HCC.

Fatigue is a debilitating and highly relevant symptom in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, awareness of fatigue and treatment options remains limited. This study was aimed at elucidating the influence of disease activity and common complications (pain, anemia, depression, anxiety and quality of life) on fatigue in patients with IBD to identify potential interventional targets for treating physicians.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the leading causes of peptic ulcers, and its treatment is a worldwide challenge. Matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors influence the development and healing of peptic ulcers. This study aimed to evaluate the ratios of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) to tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in patients with peptic ulcers that are sensitive or resistant to H. pylori treatment and compare them with healthy individuals.

Although depletion of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS1)-expressing neurons contributes to gastroparesis, stimulating nitrergic signaling is not an effective therapy. We investigated whether hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1A), which is activated by high O2 consumption in central neurons, is a Nos1 transcription factor in enteric neurons and whether stabilizing HIF1A reverses gastroparesis.

Malignant esophageal stenosis is a common and severe complication of advanced esophageal cancer that can be a serious problem in the continuation of chemotherapy and other anticancer treatments. The impact of chemotherapy regimens on the degree of improvement in esophageal stenosis is unknown. The estimated prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using Rome IV criteria in the United States (US) ranges from 4.7% to 5.3%, although these estimates arise from studies with relatively small sample sizes. This study assessed the prevalence of IBS and its associated burden of illness using a nationally representative data set with nearly 89,000 people in the US.
